Mosquito size and multiple transmission of avian malaria in the laboratory.

چکیده
Probing mosquitoes salivate before ingesting blood, and malaria sporozoites are transmitted during this phase of feeding. Large and small Aedes aegypti infected with Plasmodium gallinaceum were allowed to probe briefly on a series of 3 naive chicks. Large mosquitoes were more infective overall, but there was no difference in the ability of either size class to infect the first host. Large mosquitoes were more likely than small mosquitoes to infect more than one host during serial feeding.

Knockout of the rodent malaria parasite chitinase pbCHT1 reduces infectivity to mosquitoes.
During mosquito transmission, malaria ookinetes must cross a chitin-containing structure known as the peritrophic matrix (PM), which surrounds the infected blood meal in the mosquito midgut. In turn, ookinetes produce multiple chitinase activities presumably aimed at disrupting this physical barrier to allow ookinete invasion of the midgut epithelium. Plasmodium chitinase activities are demonst...
متن کاملVaccination against Mosquito Borne Viral Infections: Current Status
Mosquito borne infectious diseases are among important group of diseases worldwide. Vaccination is available for some tropical mosquito-borne diseases, especially for Japa-nese encephalitis virus infection and yellow fever. There are also several attempts to develop new vaccines for the other mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue infection and West Nile virus infection. In this articl...
متن کاملIn vivo transmission blocking activities of artesunate on the avian malaria parasite Plasmodium gallinaceum.
Infection and transmission of the avian malaria parasite Plasmodium gallinaceum in domestic chickens is associated with high economic burden and presents a major challenge to poultry industry in South East Asia. Development of drugs targeting both asexual blood stage parasites and sexual stages of the avian malarias will be beneficial for malaria treatment and eradication. However, current drug...
متن کاملThe Impact of Household Size on Malaria Reduction in Relation with Alterations in Mosquito Behavior by Malaria Parasite
In the present study the impact of household size together with behavioral alterations caused by parasite on malaria transmission is investigated using a discrete agent-based model of mosquito host-seeking behavior earlier calibrated against experimental data. The rate of transmission was shown to decrease with the typical size of household. Depending on the assumptions, one can observe differe...
متن کاملAvian malaria: a new lease of life for an old experimental model to study the evolutionary ecology of Plasmodium.
Avian malaria has historically played an important role as a model in the study of human malaria, being a stimulus for the development of medical parasitology. Avian malaria has recently come back to the research scene as a unique animal model to understand the ecology and evolution of the disease, both in the field and in the laboratory. Avian malaria is highly prevalent in birds and mosquitoe...
